Created in the summer of 2020, these works were inspired by sailing the local gulf islands on Vancouver Island. The work depicts rolling land masses, jutting cliffs and misty, emergent forms that overlap and interlock. A watery, gestural ground forms a base. The cool palette, evocative of fog, water, sand, and algae, is painted overtop in solid forms with hard, sharp edges. Shapes allude to perspective, but their application reinforces the flatness of the painted surface. Produced in the midst of COVID-19 and pregnancy, these works reflect on utopic fiction, safe harbour, solitude, shared experience, isolation and interconnection.
